Lot Essay

There is another slightly larger, unsigned version of this subject in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, see A. Wilton, The Life and Work of J.M.W. Turner, London, 1979, no. 146.

Among Turner's finished topographical watercolours of the mid 1790s there are a number concentrating on oblique views of bridges both in London and elsewhere, for instance Magdalen Tower and Bridge of 1794 (see Wilton 69 and 70) and Westminster Bridge of about 1796 (Wilton 96)
