Although there are few pure landscape etchings from the Fontainebleau artists the present work would seem to be of French origin, despite the extensive panorama and use of diverse architectural motifs normally associated with the Flemish artists of the early to mid 16th Century. The Master IFlemish landscape to the School of Fontainebleau and he may have directly influenced the present, apparently unrecorded work. Indeed, the pure landscape etching Paysage avec deux Guépards attributed by Zerner to that artist (L'Ecole de Fontainebleau, Paris, 1972, p. 294, no. 363) is of very similar dimensions to the present work and is also dated 1543. The use of sanguine ink by the Fontainebleau etchers is rare but nevertheless sometimes encountered (see the British Museum's impression of Zerner AF25 and the Bibliothèque Nationale's impressions of Zerner AF55 and 67).
