Lot Essay

'Downman was at his most masterly... using the simple medium of black chalk and stump (tightly-rolled paper or leather in the form of a modern pencil used to smudge strokes) on a smooth paper ground' (see J. Munro, Catalogue for the exhibition, John Downman, 1750-1824, Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, 1996, p. 17).
For another example of Downman's work in this medium, see Head of a young Woman: Study for Celadon and Amelia (J. Munro, op.cit., no. 47, illustrated).
