A GEORGE III MAHOGANY STICK BAROMETER

The foliate-engraved brass Vernier scale flanked by a mercurial thermometer and, signed 'Thos. Knight Thaxstead, Maker', the hygrometer above within a boxwood and ebony-inlaid chequer and star parquetry border beneath a broken pediment, chequer inlay to the trunk terminating with a turned cistern cover

Lot Essay

Thomas Knight (1745-1812) was a renowned barometer, clock, watchmaker and silversmith. He owned two farms outside Thaxtead and apparently received several medals and prizes from the Royal Society for different inventions, mainly agricultural.
His memorial stone in Thaxtead churchyard records 'He fell from his horse dead near the common on 14 July 1812, aged 67 years'.
His son, John, succeeded to his business at Thaxtead until his death in about 1835.
