In his early days, he called himself Okamoto Shoraku (see the fuchi-kashira of lot 208). During the Meiwa period, he changed his name to Naoshige. There is a signature of Meiwa which reads "shichi koin rokugatsu (1770 June) Tetsugendo Naoshige zo kore, and Meiwa shinbo hachi nigatsu (1771 February) Noashige zo" (1st or 2nd Noashige).

The Unshu Haruta school is one of the Katchushi line (another group
worked in Echizen, see vol 1, Tsubakohen). They worked in Izumo
province and these areas, including the neighbouring provinces of Hoki, Bingo and Iwami were where interesting legends were born.
