Shimizu artists worked in Yatsushiro in Higo province until the 8th generation. The first Jingo, who died in 1675, was a nephew of Hirata Hikozo and was a most distinguished artist, famous for bold shinchu suemon on an iron plate. His work displayed a strong, energetic character.
The second generation (1620-1710) had a more refined style. The third Jingo master (1691-1777) was a student of the third Kanshiro. However, he was to rise above his teacher and establish himself.
Because they were all in the service of the Hosokawa daimyo, Higo artists were permitted only to sign their work after kanreki [the age of 60].
