A BIZEN TANTO IN HIRAMAKIE LACQUER MOUNTS
Mei: Kanekatsu, 16th Century, the mounts, late Edo period (19th Century)
The blade hirazukuri, iorimnue, forging pattern itame mixed with masame, tempered edge midare of nioi, kaeri-boshi, tang suriage with two holes, 10 5/8in. (27.1cm.), in shirasaya; with a roironuri ground aikuchi koshirae decorated in gold hiramakie with gourd vines, with gilt kurikata formed as a double gourd on vines in takabori, with signature Tokuoki, gilt ishime-ji kojiri and kashira carved with gourd and vines in kebori, the kojiri with signature Tokuoki, the tsuka with gilt menuki in katabori and the ishime-ji kozuka similarly decorated in takabori, with signature Tokuoki to the cat-scratched reverse, the kozuka blade signed Hojo and kao, some lacquer chips
