A BIZEN KANEMITSU WAKIZASHI WITH KOSHIRAE BY ISHIGURO MASAYOSHI
Mei: Bishu Osafune Kanemitsu and dated Enbun gan.. (1356) gatsubi, the mounts, 19th Century
The blade hirazukuri, iorimune with a carving of gomabashi and dragon, forging pattern itame mixed with masame, tempered edge midare of nioi, kaeri-boshi, tang machi-okuri with three holes, 12 7/8in. (32.7cm.), in shirasaya; with roironuri lacquer mounts fitted with gold and shakudo nanako and gilt kanamono en suite comprising kojiri with karako, scabbard kanagu in the form of Hotei appearing from his sack, kurikata with Fukurokuju, gilt uragawara of minogame clambering on driftwood, kozuka with Benten playing the biwa, with a gilt cat-scratched back plate, signed Ishiguro Masayoshi kin sen kore, the kozuka blade carved with a flowering prunus branch in kebori, signed Hakuo (Goto Ichijo), the mokkogata shakudo nanako tsuba with Bishamonten, signed Ishiguro Masayoshi kin sen, black wrapped tsuka, the kashira with Jurojin and the fuchi with karako and deer, signed Ishiguro Masayoshi and kao, a pair of menuki depicting Ebisu with fish and baskets and Daikoku with his sack and rice bales, the blade accompanied with a certificate and a letter from NBTHK stating it passed the 34th Juyo Token Shinsa, dated April, 1988, with a wood box

Lot Essay

Ishiguro Masayoshi (1764-circa 1880's) was adopted to Rangaku [Dutch medicine] doctor Okamoto Yusen. Masayoshi first studied with Sano Naoyoshi and later became a prominent student of Ishiguro Masatsune. Working as a metalworker to Shimazu family in Edo branch, his examples with sophisticated taste of Edo at the time influenced rough Satsuma kinko.

The blade certificate is Tokubetsu Hozon Token Kanteisho, 101758.
