Lot Essay

Walter Winans (1852-1920) was born in Russia, but spent much of his working life in the United States and in England, where he died. He is best known today for his bronze statuettes of equestrian groups mostly inspired by his American period. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1894 until the year of his death 1920. Winans's 1894 entry was his bronze group of The Sioux Chief 'Sitting Bull', and again from 1909 onwards he exhibited horse groups yearly many, as here, of Mexican and Texan subjects. The present lively group relates to a fine equestrian statuette of Buffalo Bill Mounting his Bucking Horse of 1892 sold in Christie's New York (Important American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, 23 May 1990, Lot 91).
