LEVAILLANT, François. Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets. Paris: Levrault frères, 1801-1805.

2 volumes, 2° (513 x 336mm.). Half-titles. 145 FINE ENGRAVED PLATES, PRINTED IN COLOURS AND FINISHED BY HAND, by Langlois after Jacques Barraband. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 60 DUPLICATE PLATES. (Some dampstaining to upper margins of vol.I, occasional unobtrusive spotting or browning.) Contemporary London green straight-grained morocco, finely tooled in gilt and blind, gilt armorial crest (Baron Holland) at head of spines, g.e., by Henry Walther with his ticket (spines discoloured, joints a little scuffed). Provenance: Henry Richard Vassall Fox, 3rd Baron Holland (Holland House armorial bookplate).

A FINE LARGE COPY OF ONE OF THE SCARCEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL OF LEVAILLANT'S WORKS. Barraband (1767 or 1768-1809) worked for the Gobelin factory and was considered the best ornithological artist of his time. Langlois' engravings capture the precision and beauty of his gouache and watercolour originals. The reason for the 60 duplicates is unclear, but they are not later insertions. The duplicates are in addition to the 'bis' plates 2; 95; 98; 107; 108 and 110. Nissen 558; Fine Bird Books 90; Anker 303; Zimmer p.392. (2)
