2 volumes, 2° (333 x 220mm.). Large engraved folding map, 284 double-page or folding engraved plates on guards, some on 3 sheets, mostly by Van der Gucht and J. Savage, all except one plate FULLY COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY OR EARLY HAND. (13 plates in vol.I slightly shaved or cropped, minor tear in fold of 5 plates without loss, 3 plates bound upside-down, text leaf 4K1 in vol.II stained.) Early 19th-century English green straight-grained morocco gilt, edges gilt. Provenance: Le Tellier Marquis de Courtenvaux (18th-century stamp on title); Sir Lawrence Palk of Haldon House, Devon (early-19th-century armorial bookplate); Matthew White Viscount Ridley (armorial bookplate).
In 1687/88 Hans Sloane spent 15 months in Jamaica as physician to the Duke of Albermarle, governor of the island. During that time he gathered circa 800 plants which he took back to his herbarium in England. Using those he produced the first flora and fauna of Jamaica and the neighbouring islands. In spite of the occasional shaved plate, A FINE COLOURED COPY. Brunet states: 'Les exemplaires avec les planches color. sont très rares et ont plus de valeur que les autres'.
