AN ATTIC WHITE GROUND LEKYTHOS, near the Inscription Painter, 450-440 B.C.

Depicting a warrior and his wife at his tomb; the warrior wears a short chiton, sword and greaves, holding a spear diagonally in his left hand and with his right hand holds his Corinthian helmet at which he gazes, its hair flowing loose. The tomb is in the form of a tall stele on three steps, surmounted by a palmette and banded decoration with taeniae tied around and hanging down in faded red. The warrior's wife stands facing him with solemn expression. She wears a long sleeveless chiton with a faded red belt and border. In her right hand she suspends a house-shaped kibotion, the end and gable decorated with a stylized figure of a running man and dotted borders. In the crook of her left arm she carries a flat basket containing a lekythos, also decorated with a stylized figure of a running man, a decorated alabastron and wreaths with plain and red taeniae hanging down. In the field to the left of her face is a wreath with red and brown leaves. Above her is a nonsense inscription NA*; above the warrior are the letters KA*ES.

On the shoulder are spindly palmettes, with a tongue pattern above, and a band of meanders interrupted by chequerboard squares below
