HOFFMANN, Jacob. Eigentlicher Entwurf der Kayl. Haupt-und Residentz-Statt Wien in Oesterreich, wie selbige von dem Türcken den 14.Jul: An. 1683 belägert. Vienna: [1683].

Engraved panoramic view of the Siege of Vienna, on 4 sheets, joined (overall 900 x 1330mm.). The view looks down on the plain and city from the west, the foreground showing in detail an attack on a Turkish encampment by Imperial light horsemen. in the background the city and villages below in flames and the Turkish camp dotted around the hillsides. The double-headed imperial eagle soars above holding a banderolle quoting Psalms 17, at lower margin dedication to King Leopold, title and key to the principal points of action, outer margins with tapestry edging. (Several clean repaired tears to margins.)

An imposing contemporary view of the Turkish siege of Vienna in the summer of 1683 by the art director of Vienna University. The attack in the foreground may well depict the arrival of the Polish and German auxiliaries under John Sobieski of Poland, who liberated the city after a siege of two months. Thieme-Becker 17, 264-5.
