Strauss addresses Zemlinsky (1871-1942) as the Kapellmeister of the Deutsches Landestheater in Prague, where he was opera conductor from 1911 to 1927. A lifelong friend of Schönberg, Zemlinsky won the recognition of Brahms as a young man and had a distinguished career as conductor and composer.

Strauss refers to Zemlinsky's opera Eine florentinische Tragödie, which he composed in 1915-1916, based on Meyerfeld's translation of the Wilde play. The work was first performed in Stuttgart on 30 January 1917.
