The manuscript is dedicated to two of the leading Wagner disciples. Judith and Catulle Mendès-Gautier visited Wagner in 1869 at Tribschen during his second exile. Judith Mendès (1845-1917) was the daughter of Theophile Gautier and an ardent adherent of Wagner. In 1876 she went to Bayreuth where she began a liaison with Wagner which was of considerable importance to him during the composition of Parsifal. Her husband, Catulle Mendès, whom she married in 1866, was also a devoted disciple of Wagner. The couple separated in 1874. Mendès's relationship with Wagner suffered after the Franco-Prussian war and particularly after Wagner expressed his satisfaction, notably in Eine Kapitulation, at the outcome. Nonetheless Mendès published the first full-length biography of Wagner in 1886 and urged the French to apply Wagnerian theories of culture to their own heritage.

This manuscript dates from a comparatively early stage in the composition of Götterdämmerung which was completed on 21 November 1874 and was first performed at the inaugural Bayreuth festival of 1876 in the Cycle running from 13 to 17 August.
