BORODIN, Alexander (1833-1887). Autograph letter signed to Franz Liszt, in French, St. Petersburg, 23 June 1880, thanking Liszt profusely for his help and support for the performance of his symphony at Baden, which he heard about through M.Riedel, Si l'oeuvre était produite et eût du succès - c'est à Vous et toujours à Vous que je le dois, 2 pages, 8°, 209 x 130mm.

An expansive letter full of gratitude to Liszt, who was largely responsible for Borodin's music being heard in western Europe. The performance to which Borodin refers was that of his E flat Symphony on 20 May 1880 at Baden-Baden.

Borodin first met Liszt in the summer of 1877, when the former was in Germany to inspect university chemical laboratories, and they met again in June 1881 at Magdeburg, during the festival of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Musikverein, and at Weimar, shortly after Borodin had dedicated his musical picture, In Central Asia, to Liszt. In 1883 he published an article Liszt in his Weimar home.
