Contemporary speckled calf, covers with double fillet border in blind, gilt arms of William Laud, as Archbishop of Canterbury, blocked at centre of covers (rebacked, upper cover detached, ties lacking), later morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: William Laud (bound for presentation); Sir Richard Betenson, Bart. (ownership stamps); Joseph Bevan Braithwaite (bookplate); George Goyder (armorial bookplate).

PRESENTATION COPY of the first edition, with 'Lawd' rather than 'Lavvd' reading on title. The work 'marks his ecclesiastical position between Hooker and Chillingworth' (DNB). Laud had been asked by James I to try and dissuade the Duchess of Buckingham from embracing the Catholic faith. STC 15298.
