Lot Essay

This representation of Christ as the Man of Sorrows shows Him in profile, bound to a stocky column, which conforms in type to the one in Santa Prassede, Rome, traditionally believed to have been the actual column of the Flagellation. The style of the present relief suggests northern Italy, and a Milanese origin has been proposed.
