Lot Essay

The present relief is a copy of Boucher's painting of Autumn, also known as Five Putti Playing with a Goat, it exists in several versions, and was widely engraved. The author of the present relief may well have known the design from an engraving, such as the one entitled La Fête de Bacchus, which was also of influence on Clodion (cf. Clodion, exhib. cat., op. cit.).
