Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) was the eldest brother of a successful and prolific family of sculptors. He worked on numerous public monuments, as well as a large series of decorative bronze statuettes for which he is primarily famed. He became one of the administrators of the Val d'Osne foundry, and it is likely that most of his own work was cast at this foundry. The present graceful figure of Psyche belongs to his most accomplished and serious oeuvre, it relates in mood and style to his set of Seasons placed outside at Osborne House and to his Nymphe Marine in the Place du Théâtre Français in Paris.
