Lot Essay

Moore was elected an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society (formerly Old Watercolour Society) in 1884, and exhibited there until 1889. As so often with his work, the present composition exists in more than one version, being followed by an oil in 1886, similar in scale but simpler in design and different in colouring (York City Art Gallery; repr. in the catalogue of the Newcastle exhibition, 1972, pl. 27)
