In 1921 Slevogt painted a series of landscapes depicting the countryside surrounding the village of Neukastel where the artist lived at that time. (H.-J. Imiela, op. cit., p.260.)

In these landscape paintings Slevogt develops a technique of liquid application of colours in a series of short, thick brushstrokes. Executed in this manner, the present painting is a fine example of Slevogt's mature landscape-painting style.
