FIRST EDITION of the earliest treatise on tobacco. Gohory's botanical decsritpion of the plant is partly derived from Liébault's La Maison Rustique of 1564, but the section on tobacco cultivation in France is original. Gohory names the plant 'Herbe de la Reine' or 'Medicée' in honour of Catherine de' Medici, and notes that "it is a remarkable thing, if it be true, as a friend has affirmed, that the natives of Florida use the perfume of the Medicée by means of a vaporiser through the nose, and that this sustains them without food for several days".
Besson's work is also rare (unknown to Fergusson or Duveen), and Hovel's Traité de la Peste is a FIRST EDITION.
