GOULD, John (1804-1881). The Birds of Great Britain. London: printed by Taylor and Francis, published by the author, [1862]-1873.

5 volumes, large 2° (555 x 375mm.). 367 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Gould, H. C. Richter, Joseph Wolf and W. Hart by Richter and Hart, many heightened with gum-arabic. (Very occasional light spotting.) Green half morocco gilt, t.e.g., by Sotheran.

A fine copy, originally issued in 25 parts. The size of this copy suggests that it was bound up from original parts at the turn of the century. In this copy the Snowy Owl plate is uncracked. Gould was particularly proud of this work and it was perhaps the most successful of all his publications during his lifetime. Nissen IVB 372; Zimmer p. 261; Fine Bird Books p. 78; Sauer 23. (5)
