Lot Essay

This watercolour is dated c. 1848 by Lister (1988, loc. cit.). It is in Palmer's typical 'little long' format and is a typical portrayal of the artist's idealised vision of country life, also found in such works as The Cottager's Return of c. 1833 (Lister 1988, no. 162) and The Herdsman's Cottage etching of 1850
