This enamel, after the portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots by an unknown artist in the collection of the Marquis of Salisbury, is one of several versions known as the "Sheffield" portrait. The type is alleged to have been painted by Peter Oudry when the Queen was in captivity in Sheffield. The likeness is taken from Nicholas Hilliard's miniature, painted from life in 1578. Other versions of this portrait can be found in the National Portrait Gallery, London, no. 1073, Hardwick Hall and Holyrood House
