Lot Essay

Biebuyck (1973, Pl.34) illustrates a group of wooden masks including this type, and describes them as used in luhwahongo rites by each member of the bwami cult leading to membership of lutumbo iwa yanino (a grade). Bassani (1977, p.15, fig.56) illustrates a similar mask collected by E. Brissoni in 1921.
