These large face masks (alternatively spelt kakuunga) are the most powerful used by the Suku (formerly also by the Yaka) and were worn by priests during circumcision rites (Maesen, 1969, p. 28). Bourgeois (1984, pp. 119 and 125) describes such a mask as worn by un spécialiste en talismans d'initiation yisidika (which is translated by J.B. Donne as "an initiation charm specialist yisidika"), said to depict the ghost of an elder possessing anti-social powers, but not the personification of a given ancestor, nor does it embody a spirit. Kakunga is not only a mask but is considered a lineage charm used both within and outside n-khanda initiation to protect and effect human fertility. Between ceremonies they are stored in secret caves.
