A BRONZE MODEL OF JUPITER
CIRCLE OF ALLESSANDRO VITTORIA, LATE 16TH CENTURY

Brown patina; on an associated cylindrical marble pedestal.
13 1/8in. (33.3cm.) high

Lot Essay

This bronze was no doubt originally intended to surmount an andiron, or firedog. The figure type and the rough, energetic treatment of the surface both suggest that it was executed in late sixteenth century Venice, in the circle of Alessandro Vittoria. However, the representation of Jupiter with his eagle and thunderbolt is by no means identical to the celebrated model by Vittoria, and appears to be an otherwise unrecorded adaptation of it.
