The Story of Rajapala
Executed in, or before 1937
Wash technique and watercolour on paper, pencil and black ink framing lines, framed and glazed.
25 x 32.5 cm.
The artist was a member of the Pita Maha artists' association. Soekarja was the brother-in-law of Gusti Made Rundu. Bateson & Mead collected thirteen works by the artist. Thirty-eight works of his are kept in the Pusat Dokumentasi Bali, Denpasar. Also recorded as: I Sukari, I Sukario, I Sukurio, I Soekario, and I Sukaria. For other interpretations of the subject see also lots 62, 82, and 148. Inscribed with the artist's name and a sketch of a dancer on the reverse.
To be illustrated in a forthcoming book by Dr. A. Vickers: Balinese Painting; Mementoes, Diversions, Masterworks (1928-1942), (Pepin Press).
