Lot Essay

Tooloogan Rock is near Dart Brook and Thornthwaite in the Upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales. The watercolour is listed in Martens' Account Book on 14 May 1864 as View from the 'Toolugan' [sic] Rock, Dart Brook. It was purchased for £25.5.0 by Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, a wealthy Sydney merchant who had an extensive art collection at his house, 'Greenoaks', Darling Point and patronised Martens from the mid-1840s.

The Mitchell and Dixson collections of the State Library of New South Wales have three field sketches of Tooloogan Rock by Martens relating to this watercolour done on a journey to the Hunter Valley in May and June 1862.

We are grateful to Elizabeth Ellis, State Library of New South Wales, for the above information.
