Lot Essay

Built by John Roach & Son of Chester, Pennsylvania, the Saratoga was a screw steamer of the Ward Line and sailed out of New York City from 1878 to 1908. Jacobsen painted eleven views of her from 1878 to 1899, including two sketches and nine completed oils; six of these views are in museum collections.
