Lot Essay

One of two ships by the same name painted by Jacobsen, the Cienfuegos portrayed here was a screw steamer built by John Roach & Son of Chester, Pennsylvania. The Cienfuegos was a vessel of the Ward Line, sailing out of New York City from 1883-1895. Jacobsen painted four versions of her, including an oil sketch and three completed oils, of which the canvas illustrated here is the last. See Sniffen, Antonio Jacobsen: The Checklist (New York, 1984), pp.66-67.
