A SAFAVID TINNED COPPER BOWL
Iran, probably Isfahan, last quarter 17th century
Of shallow rounded form with vertical sides on short foot, the exterior engraved with a band of dense vegetation around a succession of figural scenes including a variety of animals, mythical creatures and humans, a band of meandering flowering vine above and below, a band of bold fleshy nasta'liq around the rim, reciprocal trefoil motifs around and above the foot, slightly bent, tinning thinning
13 7/8in. (35.1cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription contains invocations to God and the Fourteen Innocents.
Two other bowls with very similar decorative ensembles were sold in these Rooms 10 October 1989 and 25 April 1997. Both were dated, the first to AH 1088/1677-8 AD and the second to the following year.
