Lot Essay

Lt. Col. Charles Richard Fox was a numismatist and high-ranking military officer who was promoted to General in 1863. He was the son of Henry Richard Vassall, 3rd Baron Holland, and served in the Royal Navy from 1809 to 1813. He served as an equerry to Queen Adelaide in 1830 and a member of Parliament for Calne, Tavistock and Stroud. In 1832, he was appointed Surveyor-General of the Ordinance and Aide-de-Camp to William IV. His numismatic collection, described in his Engravings of Unedited or Rare Greek Coins, published in 1835, was purchased by the Berlin Royal Museum in 1873.
