HUNTER, Lieutenant James. Picturesque Scenery in the Kingdom of Mysore, from forty drawings taken on the spot. London: W. Bulmer and Co. for Edward Orme, 1805.

8 original parts (only, of 10), oblong broadsheets (436 x 555mm). Letterpress title dedication and index, aquatint portrait of the Tipoo Sultan, printed in colour and finished by hand by Scott after Edward Orme, 32 aquatint views only, printed in colour and finished by hand, by H. Merke, Harraden and J. C. Stadler after Hunter, most with tissue guards. (Lacking parts 3 and 9, comprising plates 10-13 and 34-37, text and plates with central crease.) Original blue paper wrappers, each with Orme's lozenge-shaped paper label on front cover showing stipple-engraved dromedary and title, the number of each part added in manuscript (four parts disbound, others shaken, front wrapper to part I soiled), in later marbled paper portfolio.

A rare set of the plates in their original parts. Hunter's views were sold with 24 views of Hindustan by William Daniell and Colonel Francis Swain Ward, and a letterpress Brief History of Ancient and Modern India by Francis William Blagdon: the latter title became the title for the whole work, which included 68 plates and was published by Orme in 1805 at ¨21. The individual prices for the three sections and their constituent parts are not known, but the publisher's preface to the whole work (not present here) does state that the two sections of views may be bound separately, or each set of views with its own History, so it seems likely that all three sections of the work were also sold individually. A later edition of the complete work was published as an upright folio: the title is dated 1805, but the Abbey copy was watermarked 1820 (text) and 1827-8 (plates). Abbey Travel 424; Lipperheide Ld 10; Colas 1508; Brunet III, 381 "magnifique recueil". (8)
