Lot Essay

These drawing-room chairs with shield-shaped backs are designed in the antique style of the 1770's and their pattern was popularised by A. Hepplewhite & Co's, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. A set of four armchairs of this identical pattern but with unfluted back legs, was sold from the collection of the late Winnafreda, Countess of Portarlington, in these Rooms, 27 November 1975, lot 84
