The sitter was the son of Puran Chand Kapur, also painted by Hudson circa 1860, who was adopted into the ruling house of Burdwan by the Maharaja, Mahtab Chand, his brother-in-law. The artist who was living in Calcutta between 1856 and 1862 painted a series of members of the court of Burdwan during this period including Portrait of Babu Rama Brasag Rai, Christie's sale, Castletown House, Co. Kilkenny, 7 October 1991, lot 218, #12,000.
