The present picture is a hitherto unrecorded studio version after the original, which was most recently sold in these Rooms, 28 February 1930, lot 99 (5,200gns. to Permain). At the time of the sale when there was a dispute as to whether the sitter was Mrs. Burnett-Jones or Mrs. Francis Wood (see K. Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Oxford, 1989, p. 215, no. 447).
