Lot Essay

While the present picture is recorded as having been finished in 1825, it has been suggested that elements of the picture may have been completed by a studio hand.

The sitter was the fourth son of Charles Chaplin of Tathwell and his wife Elizabeth Thoroton. He married his cousin Elizabeth Chaplin of Blankney in 1781 and died in 1838.
