Lot Essay

The playful subject matter and the animated expression of the present female faun place it in the context of Flemish sculpture of the early 18th century. More specifically, the almond-shaped eyes which are slightly raised toward the outer corners, and the parted lips are extremely close to a full-length ivory female faun by Jan Baptist Xavery (1697-1742) which is signed and dated 1729 (loc.cit.).
