AFTER BERNINI, LATE 17TH OR 18TH CENTURY

Mottled greenish-brown patina; the shell at the bottom fitted with a water pipe, now filled; on a modern square stepped marble base.

Lot Essay

This bronze is a reduction of the marble designed by Bernini and carved by Giovan Antonio Mari in the mid-1650's to stand in the centre of an older fountain basin in the Piazza Navona, Rome (See R. Wittkower, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, The Sculptor of the Roman Baroque, London, 1955, no. 55, fig. 84).
