Note: This is one of two such known letters (see lot 26 for the other), from a correspondence discovered in 1984; it may well be one of the earliest surviving soldier's letters showing the one penny privilege rate from the West Indies. The letter includes, "when may I expect to be relieved from the unfortunate situation I am in at present. I would not be so pressing but this climate does not agree with me, nor am I able to go through the hardships of a private soldier in this country.
