A BRUGES TAPESTRY, woven in wools and silks, en suite with the preceding lots, depicting the triumphal entrance of a victorious general, the procession headed by trumpeters and followed by an equestrian figure holding a laurel-sprig with three crowns, and foot-soldiers, with a pair of prancing horses beyond, bearing a carriage, the wheels crowned by a martial trophy with two flags woven with a fleur-de-lys and crescents and surmounted by a stepped platform, supporting two prisoners, bound around a crown and sceptre-enriched palm tree, with further soldiers beyond, the foreground woven with flowers and an obelisk, with figures and an extensive fortified town beyond and a neo-classical tempietto to the corner, the border woven with a central silhouette portrait of a general, flanked by lions, plumed-helmets, flags and putti, the sides woven with angels supporting further laurel-bound silhouettes, above a further studded grotesque-mask and arabesques, the lower border woven with martial trophies, fasces, pelta and lions, the central plumed helmet flanked by trumpet and wreath-bearing angels with fleur-de-lys and crescent-flags, all upon a burgundy ground, within a rosette outer border and blue-striped slip, mid-16th Century, restorations and areas of re-weaving, previously cut 137 x 195½in.
