A BRUGES TAPESTRY, woven in wools and silks, en suite with the preceding lots, depicting a triumphal procession, with a victorious soldier holding a shield and a pipe, standing in the foreground, the elephant beyond supporting three standard-bearers and a platform with soldiers holding mask-headed shields, the foreground woven with flowers and foliage in an extensive classical landscape, with crowned kings and queens, their hands tied behind their backs, being herded from a garlanded portico surmounted by the figure of Victory, within a trailing-foliate border, the outer border centred by a grisaille cartouche with satyrs expelled by a victory trumpeter, flanked by plumed helmets, flags adorned with crescents and with angels to the sides, supporting baskets of flowers and suspending laurel-bound silhouettes, above a further beaded medallion and grotesques, all upon a burgundy ground within a striped blue strip, restorations and areas of re-weaving, previously cut, mid-16th Century
