Lot Essay

Peter Brooke, was born in 1722, the son of Peter Brooke of Mere, and his wife Frances, daughter and heiress of Francis Hollinshed of Wheelock, Cheshire. He married firstly Anne Meriel, daughter of Fleetwood Legh of Lyme. He married secondly Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Jonas Langford of Theobalds, Hertfordshire and Antigua. They had three sons and three daughters. Their second son, Jonas born in 1758, made the Grand Tour in 1783-4, and died in Milan on his way home on 19 July 1784. It was through Peter Brooke's second marriage that the name Langford became part of the family's surname. Brooke was Sheriff of Cheshire in 1766. He died on 4 January 1783 and was buried at Rostherne. His third son, Thomas, succeeded to the estate, as his two elder brothers, Peter and Jonas, had died. Mrs Langford Brooke his second wife, died on 15 December 1809.
