Lot Essay
This portrait is a copy by Northcote of Romney's portrait, sittings for which are recorded in 1792, 1794 and 1795. A note in the artist's account book records that it was sent to Henry Leicester, Esq of Dufold (presumably Dorfold) near Nantwich, and paid for by Mr Langford Brooke in full at 35gns on 23 June 1796 (see H. Ward and W Roberts, Romney: Catalogue Raisonne', II, 1904, p.18.)
Thomas was the third son of Peter Brooke and his second wife Elizabeth (see lot ...). He married Maria, daughter of the Rev. Sir Thomas Delves Broughton of Broughton and Duddington Castle; they had six sons and two daughters. He died on 21 December 1815 and was succeeded by his eldest son Peter. See also lots .....
