2° (298 x 203mm). Title with engraved arms of the dedicatee, cardinal Carlo de Medici. 90 woodcut diagrams, some full-page, woodcut device on colophon leaf. (M3 shaved with slight loss to diagram on verso, small hole in Q3, leaves V3-X2 with tiny tears affecting text and the two final diagrams, some light spotting.) Early Italian vellum over pasteboard, modern red morocco-backed cloth slipcase. Provenance: 18th-century armorial bookplate of a cardinal (unidentified); Georgius Bergonci (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of the first work to include any part of Leonardo's Trattato della Pittura. The work is divided into three parts: on the simple laws of perspective, on various solid figures, and on light and shade. Riccardi I, 4 ("E'libro alquanto raro ed assai pregiato anche per merito letterario.")
