Superbe exemplaire ayant appartenu à la Duchesse de Berry, avec son monogramme couronné "MC" sur la reliure et l'ex-libris de la bibliothèque. 2 parts in one volume, large 2° (450 x 276mm). Half-title to vol. II, two titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes. Engraved bird's-eye view of Venice on two folding sheets, folding engraved plan of Venice, 115 double-page engraved plates. (Occasional light spotting, marginal in the main, lacking half-title to vol. I, light offsetting to about 25 plates.) 18th-century French calf gilt, front cover with large crowned 'MC' monogram of the Duchesse de Berry added, spines gilt in seven compartments with raised bands, brown morocco lettering-piece in one, (small neat repairs to head and foot of spine). Provenance: MARIE-CAROLINE-FERDINANDE-LOUISE DE BOURBON-SICILE, DUCHESSE DE BERRY (1798-1870, binding, Rosny library armorial bookplate).

A FINE COPY with a distinguished provenance. These attractive views of Venice were reissued a number of times by vander Aa, in parts 29-32 of his rare La galerie agréable du monde (Leiden, 1729), and again in 1762 by Cornelis Haak under the title Vües des palais. Throughout her life the Duchesse de Berry, wife of the second son of King Charles X of France, was a patron of the arts, with a special interest in books. She lived in semi-exile in Venice, after her involvement in a failed uprising in the Vendée in 1832 and her confinement in the citadel of Blaye until 1833. She died in Austria in 1870. A large portion of her superb library at Rosny was sold at auction in 1837. Graesse VI, 472; not in Berlin Kat. or Cicognara.
