[FONTANI, Francesco (1748-1818)]. Viaggio pittorico della Toscana. Florence: Giuseppe Tofani & Co., 1801-1803.
3 volumes, tall and narrow 2° (546 x 320mm). Double-page engraved map of Tuscany by Cosimo Zocchi after Giuseppe Puliti, one folding and three double-page town-plans of Florence, Pisa, Livorno and Sienna after Puliti and Giovanni Mori, 204 aquatint plans and views by and after Antonio Terreni, Vincislao Spinazzi, Cosimo Rossi, Giovanni Pacini and others, including 4 folding or double-page general town views of Florence, Pisa, Livorno and Sienna, many plates printed in sepia. (Some text and plates misbound at start of vol. I, margins of a few leaves lightly stained, occasional light browning or spotting.) Contemporary English red straight-grained morocco, covers panelled in gilt and blind with fillets and a floral roll-tool, spine densely gold-tooled in compartments, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges, (neat repairs to some joints and corners, some light scuffing). Provenance: W. Heath, bookseller (contemporary label on pastedowns); manuscript index leaf, watermarked 1846, loosely inserted at end of vol .III.
FIRST EDITION. The plates include a mixture of exterior and interior views, the former almost exclusively after Terreni. Little appears to be known of Terreni, but it seems likely that he is related to Giuseppe Maria Terreni (1739-1811), a native of Livorno, who worked in Florence and established a reputation as a vedutista. FINE SET. (3)
